Breaking barriers
Start time: 10:00 am
Learn about the impressive history of a group of inhabitants of the Egypt neighborhood in Bogotá. Deciding to leave their criminal past behind, they started the Breaking Borders initiative, showing tourists their streets filled with works of art that tell the story of the neighborhood. In this way, tourism has formed a real alternative for their personal and professional development and opened the doors for a brighter future.
Your guide will pick you up in private transport and take you to El Chorro de Quevedo, the founding place of Bogotá. There you will meet one of the leaders of the Breaking Borders project who will be your local guide.
Passing through the colorful streets of La Candelaria, you will go to Our Lady of Egypt, the church located at the entrance of the Egypt Quarter. This is also the setting for the January 6 festivities, a three-day religious carnival that is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Barrio people. Calle Real, once people's only connection to the city, will take you deeper into the neighborhood. Your guide will stop with you at El Cuadrado, a central point in the history of gang fighting in the area. While in the past this place was a strategic point for the control of the territory of the gangs, today it is painted with images that tell the history and the new values of the people.
Walking uphill through the colorful streets of the neighborhood, you will notice how much the area has changed and has become a place of hope, peace and culture. Along the way, you will see the history of the people illustrated in impressive graffiti. Your guide will introduce you to the meanings and stories behind these murals.
Then you will reach the hills where the humble houses of the local guides and their families are located. You will notice that the community is still underdeveloped and has difficulties accessing basic services. Despite these conditions, this place is full of life thanks to the warmth, joy and desire of children to fight for their dreams.
In this area, you will also see one of the biggest changes in the neighborhood. Thanks to the project; A soccer field has been built for the children of the sector. Hear why this field is an essential part of the transformation underway.
